St Cross Fellow Elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

Prof Steve Strand OBE

St Cross College is delighted to share that Professor Steve Strand OBE, Professor of Education, has been elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, joining the autumn 2025 cohort of leading social scientists.

Professor Strand is internationally recognised for his research on educational inequalities, focusing on the impact of ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender and special educational needs on student achievement. His work has had a significant influence on both education policy and practice in the UK, addressing how schools can reduce disadvantage and promote equity.

Welcoming the new cohort, Will Hutton FAcSS, President of the Academy, said:

It’s a pleasure to welcome these ... leading social scientists to the Academy’s Fellowship. Their research and practical applications have made substantial contributions to social science and wider society in a range of areas … We look forward to working with them to promote further the vital role the social sciences play in all areas of our lives.

Earlier this year, Professor Strand was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours 2025 for services to education, and his election to the Academy further underlines the significance of his scholarship and leadership in the field.

St Cross warmly congratulates Professor Strand on this latest achievement, which highlights not only his academic excellence but also his ongoing contribution to improving educational opportunities for all.
