The Audrey Blackman Society

The Audrey Blackman Society

The College’s art collection was greatly enriched in the early 1990s by a generous legacy from Audrey Blackman, a former Member of Common Room. Audrey’s gift included her personal collection of watercolours by renowned 18th, 19th, and 20th-century British and European artists, as well as her house on Boars Hill. In recognition of this remarkable gift, the College established the Audrey Blackman Society, which honours individuals who have made legacy pledges to St Cross.

Members of the Society are invited to exclusive College events and enjoy an annual lunch hosted by the Master. If you let us know your legacy intentions, we would be delighted to welcome you as a member of this special group. Of course, if you prefer for your pledge to remain confidential we will respect your anonymity.

Audrey Blackman

Audrey Babette Blackman (1907-1990) was a distinguished British sculptor and ceramist, known for her exhibitions with the Society of Women Artists and the Royal Academy in London. She studied at Goldsmiths College of Art and the University of Reading, pioneering new ceramic techniques and publishing a handbook on her methods. Later, she shifted to more abstract works, including watercolours and gouache paintings.

Audrey was actively involved in various arts and crafts organizations and was married to Geoffrey Blackman, the Sibthorpian Professor of Rural Economy at the University of Oxford. She had a long-standing connection with St Cross as a former Member of Common Room. Several of her sculptures and pottery works are displayed at the College, and a room is named in her honour. Audrey is also celebrated by the Audrey Blackman Society.
