St Cross Fellow Professor Marina Jirotka is among the researchers featured in the University of Oxford's new Women in AI campaign, celebrating the contributions of women working at the forefront of artificial intelligence.
Launched by the University of Oxford's Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) Division, the campaign showcases the diverse expertise and experiences of women working across AI research. Through a series of videos and researcher profiles, it explores how their work is advancing knowledge and addressing challenges in fields ranging from healthcare and computing to ethics, sustainability and the social sciences.
Professor Jirotka, Professor of Human Centred Computing at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of St Cross since 2004, is internationally recognised for her work in responsible research and innovation. Her research focuses on ensuring that developments in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are shaped by human values, accountability and the rights of individuals and communities.
As AI continues to transform the way we live and work, Professor Jirotka's research examines how these technologies can be developed responsibly, placing people and society at the centre of technological innovation. Her work brings together expertise from computing, social sciences and ethics, reflecting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing the opportunities and challenges presented by AI.
The campaign includes a dedicated video featuring Professor Jirotka, offering an opportunity to learn more about her work and the importance of considering the people and communities affected by technological developments.
Reflecting on her involvement in the campaign, Professor Jirotka said:
It was wonderful to be part of this project celebrating women and AI in Oxford. Over the course of my career I have really benefited from having role models in my life, really excellent researchers from all walks of life and some particularly brilliant women. We need to encourage more voices in this new landscape of AI and to help decide how it will unfold for the future. We need to think about different ages and ethnicities and the nuances of different cultures rather than one size for all. This Women in AI project is a strong foundation.
The wider Women in AI campaign celebrates researchers from across the University of Oxford, highlighting their individual journeys, research interests and contributions to this rapidly evolving field. By sharing their experiences, the initiative also aims to inspire future generations of researchers to explore opportunities in AI and related disciplines.
St Cross warmly congratulates Professor Jirotka on her contribution to this important campaign.
