St Cross Fellow Awarded Full Professorship
St Cross College is delighted to congratulate Fellow Professor Sloan Mahone on being awarded the title of Professor of History of Medicine and Global Health by the University of Oxford.
The title of Professor is awarded in recognition of academic distinction and acknowledges Professor Mahone's internationally recognised contribution to the history of medicine, psychiatry and global health.
Professor Mahone's research has transformed understanding of the history of psychiatry and the psychological sciences in Africa, examining the intersections of medicine, colonialism, mental health and lived experience. Drawing on extensive research across East, Southern and Central Africa, her work has shed new light on the social, political and cultural dimensions of healthcare, while more recent projects have explored the role of photography and visual archives in documenting the history of neurology and psychiatry in colonial Kenya.
Alongside her research, Professor Mahone teaches and supervises undergraduate, master's and doctoral students across the history of medicine and global health. Her teaching spans subjects including the history of medicine in Africa, global psychiatry, colonialism, the history of photography, oral history and the psychology of religion, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and the development of future researchers.
Professor Mahone has been a Fellow of St Cross College since 2005, and her work continues to influence scholarship in the history of medicine while fostering collaboration across the humanities, social sciences and clinical disciplines.
