St Cross College is delighted to congratulate Professor Manuel Fernández-Götz on receiving the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

This highly competitive international award recognises outstanding researchers from outside Germany who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and are expected to continue producing cutting-edge work. Award recipients are invited to undertake research in collaboration with colleagues in Germany, strengthening international academic exchange.

Professor Fernández-Götz, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Oxford, is recognised for his significant contributions to the study of later prehistoric and Roman Europe. His research has advanced understanding of Iron Age societies, urbanisation, and conflict archaeology, and has been widely influential within the field.

The Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award is granted to a select group of scholars each year and includes funding to support extended research visits in Germany. It is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious international honours in the humanities and sciences, reflecting both past achievement and future research potential.
