The Oxford Uehiro St Cross Visiting Programme (2025)

Joining us from: Japan

Recognised Student - Philosophy (2025)

I am a visiting student at the Uehiro Institute as part of the 2025/26 Oxford-Uehiro-St Cross Visiting Program. My primary research interests lie in animal and environmental ethics, and during this visit I will be working on questions surrounding wild animal suffering under the supervision of Professor Guy Kahane. Having been educated in Japan’s English-medium university program, I am also interested in philosophy education within the context of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).

I am deeply grateful to the Uehiro Foundation on Ethics and Education for their generous funding of my studies at the University of Oxford. My first encounter with the Foundation was a turning point in my life, and since then I have been blessed with the supportive and inclusive culture of the wider Uehiro community. Coming from a less privileged background, I feel extremely fortunate to be part of Oxford, to have the opportunity to learn from and work with its world-leading researchers as well as many others, and to have access to its rich academic resources. None of this would have been possible without the Foundation’s generous support.

As an emerging researcher, I look forward to further developing my research project at Oxford. I also hope to carry this experience forward in pursuing a career in philosophy and advancing the ultimate aim of my research, which is to contribute to an ethically-grounded form of coexistence between us, animals, and the rest of nature.
