St Cross College is delighted to welcome entrepreneur Nick English, co-founder of the British luxury watchmaker Bremont, as our next Professional in Residence. He will deliver a lecture on Engineering a Brand: A Story of Grit and British Manufacturing, Tuesday 10 March at 5.15pm in the Lecture Theatre, followed by a drinks reception.
The Professionals in Residence programme, generously supported by alumnus Doug Wigdor (MLitt Social Studies, 1993), is a flagship College initiative designed to connect our students with distinguished leaders from outside academia. Each residency centres on meaningful engagement – lectures, opportunities for conversation, and interviews – ensuring students gain practical insight alongside academic study. A second Professional in Residence will join us in April – further details will be announced shortly.
Nick’s work is grounded in a belief in long-term value over short-term consumption. He argues that industries must move away from disposable culture and towards quality and durability. Under his leadership, Bremont grew into a globally recognised brand, partnering with organisations including Williams Formula 1, Boeing and the UK Ministry of Defence, while investing in skills and apprenticeships in Britain. Since stepping back from the company, he has remained active as an investor and advocate for heritage manufacturing.
For students across all disciplines, this is an opportunity to explore how to build responsibly and balance ambition with social and environmental conscience. Those interested in business and entrepreneurship will gain a candid perspective on starting from scratch and scaling an idea in a competitive market.
