Paula Soans O'Brian Scholarship

Joining us from: Brazil

DPhil in Theology (2024)

My research focuses on the Hebrew Bible, particularly on how concepts are developed in its literature. My doctoral dissertation looks into the hermeneutics of transformation in the Hodayot, a collection of Hebrew hymns from the 2nd Century BCE that shares many themes with the Biblical text. I’m particularly interested in how birth and the womb are used as images connected to knowledge, mystery and divine revelation. Having already done a master’s degree at Oxford, it was very important for me to continue working with my supervisor and to still be part of my vibrant academic community, which has inspired my work in countless ways. Receiving the Paula Soans O’Brien scholarship has not only made that possible, but it has also enabled me to dedicate much needed time to my professional development in my field. With the financial support, I was able to make professional decisions that would benefit my career in the long-term rather than only attend to my immediate needs. Being part of St Cross has been a delight: the students and staff are warm and lively, and Pusey House has become my church community. I had the privilege of getting married there in May 2025 and the St Cross events team went above and beyond to make my day special. I’m grateful to have this important day forever attached to St Cross. When I’m not studying, I row (a lot), spend time with God, travel, study elegance and fashion, listen to geopolitical podcasts with my husband, and use a variety of vegetables to make gnocchi (carrots, sweet potatoes, beetroot…).
