The Oxford Uehiro St Cross Visiting Programme (2024)
Joining us from: Japan
Recognised Student - Philosophy (2024)
I am a visiting scholar at St Cross College, Oxford, from the University of Tokyo in Japan for the 2024/2025 academic year. My doctoral research investigated the ultimate standard of morally right action, and my current postdoctoral project explores the very nature of that standard.
Since arriving in Oxford I have immersed myself in a rich programme of lectures and seminars. As a recognised student I have benefited from engaging with an intellectual community that constantly sharpens my thinking. Conversations with leading moral philosophers — opportunities unavailable to me in Japan — have decisively advanced my work.
The Oxford Uehiro–St Cross Visiting Scholars Programme has been invaluable. Free from financial pressure, I was able to devote the final two months before submission entirely to writing and revising my thesis.
Life at St Cross has been equally rewarding. From the welcome at the Porters' Lodge to discussions in the SCR, I have found the college community to be consistently warm, generous and inclusive.
Outside of study, I enjoy running along the Thames Path, reading classic novels and unwinding with British television dramas — pastimes that provide a healthy balance to intensive academic work.
I am profoundly grateful for the opportunities afforded to me by this programme and look forward to carrying the insights gained at St Cross into the next stages of my career in philosophy.
