Uehiro Scholarship for Future Generations

DPhil Psychiatry (PT) 2024
I am a DPhil student in Psychiatry at the University of Oxford and a neurosurgery resident at Columbia University in New York.
I am originally from Chicago and received my BA in Biology and Psychology, Doctor of Medicine, and MBA degrees from Northwestern University.
My DPhil focuses on the ethics of deep brain stimulation for psychiatric disorders. This is an exciting area of study and practice with unique ethical considerations relative to standard applications of deep brain stimulation and is likely to become increasingly relevant as the psychiatric applications of deep brain stimulation continue to expand. Currently, I am working on a foundational systematic review on the ethics of deep brain stimulation for psychiatric disorders.
I am also planning theoretical pieces to explore issues of identity and authenticity focused on specific psychiatric disorders, as well as empirical ethics studies to explore stakeholder perspectives on these issues. I aim to develop practical guidance for the appropriate and responsible clinical use of deep brain stimulation for these new and evolving indications.
I am immensely grateful to the Uehiro Foundation for its support of my academic endeavors. The St Cross Uehiro Scholarship for Future Generations has facilitated my development as a scholar, provided me with an opportunity to pursue advanced study in an area of neuroethics that I am particularly passionate about, and catalyzed the formation of relationships with mentors and other scholars in the field.
