DPhil Philosophy (2023)
My name is Katerina Jennings, a second-year student at St Cross pursuing a DPhil in Philosophy funded by the Oxford Faculty of Philosophy and the Uehiro Scholarship for Future Generations. While at Oxford, I have devoted a significant amount of my time to two particular extracurricular pursuits: teaching philosophy at HMP Bronzefield Prison as part of the Philosophy in Prison (PiP) programme and contributing to University theatre and comedy as President of the Oxford Revue, Oxford’s oldest comedy society. PiP is a charity run by a community of philosophers working to make philosophical thinking accessible to anyone, irrespective of educational background and literacy. Meanwhile, the Oxford Revue’s overarching goal is to foster the support, development, improvement and promotion of comedy, both at the University and more broadly in the community. We will return this August to perform in our 62nd consecutive annual Edinburgh Fringe show, which I will be directing, producing and performing in. I am beyond grateful to have been chosen as one of three St Cross Community Bursary recipients for the 2024-2025 year. I will proudly use these funds to (i) support the Oxford Theatre scene by helping to fund the Oxford Revue’s upcoming Edinburgh Fringe Festival show and cast travel costs to ensure all in the Revue are able to make the trip and perform regardless of socioeconomic background, and (ii) assist with my travel costs to and from the prisons all around the UK where I teach for PiP.
