Prof Sibel Erduran
St Cross College is delighted to share that Professor Sibel Erduran, Fellow of St Cross and Professor of Science Education at the University of Oxford’s Department of Education, has been elected to the Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences.
She joins a distinguished cohort of 64 new Fellows recognised this spring for their excellence in research, professional practice, and contributions to the social sciences for public benefit. The new Fellows span a wide range of disciplines, from health inequalities and cybersecurity governance to AI and the gender wage gap, highlighting the breadth and relevance of social science in addressing contemporary global challenges.
Professor Erduran’s election reflects her internationally recognised work in science education, where her research explores how argumentation, epistemic practices, and teacher professional development can enrich science teaching and learning. Her contributions to educational research and policy have had impact both in the UK and globally, bridging the gap between academic insight and classroom practice.
Reflecting on the announcement, Professor Erduran said:
I am thrilled to be recognised by the Academy of Social Sciences. As a science educator, I am particularly honoured that my interdisciplinary work bridging science and social science has received this distinction. The Fellowship presents exciting opportunities to collaborate with other Fellows and to contribute to the wider societal impact of the social sciences.
The Academy of Social Sciences, whose Fellowship includes over 1,600 leading academics, policymakers, and practitioners, selects Fellows following an independent peer review process. All Fellows are recognised for their substantial achievements in the advancement of social science and its application in wider society.
Will Hutton FAcSS, President of the Academy, said:
I’m delighted to welcome these 64 outstanding social scientists to the Academy’s Fellowship, whose research and practice are helping to develop solutions to pressing societal issues. From informing decision-making around environmental challenges and encouraging entrepreneurial growth to improving planning systems and tackling educational inequalities, their insights, skills and understanding are delivering positive impact to improve our daily lives.
St Cross College warmly congratulates Professor Erduran on this well-deserved recognition.
