St Cross student Emma Nihill Alcorta has translated and directed a bold new adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s Spanish tragedy Blood Wedding (Bodas de Sangre), coming to the Oxford Playhouse from the 4th – 7th June.
Generously supported by the Dick Repp Prize from the College, the production is grand in scale, featuring an original score and choreography inspired by flamenco, a twenty-two strong ensemble and a live onstage band. A 20th century Romeo and Juliet, Lorca’s masterpiece asks what it means to love dangerously and deeply, and what it takes to defy tradition. Blending powerfully adapted English dialogue with moments of Lorca’s original poetry (supported by surtitles), this production is a joyous celebration of cultural exchange which has its roots in twentieth-century Andalucía and twenty-first century Oxford.
