St Cross alumnus Professor Tilman Brück (1997, DPhil Economics) has been appointed to the Steering Committee of the High-Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN) of the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS). The HLPE-FSN serves as the United Nations’ science-policy interface for global food security and nutrition and is governed by a steering committee of 15 world-renowned scientists.
Professor Brück is Professor of Economic Development and Food Security at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Research Group Leader at the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ). He also heads the Zero Hunger Lab, a joint initiative of Humboldt-Universität and IGZ dedicated to advancing research and policy to help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger. He is additionally the Founder and Director of the International Security and Development Centre in Berlin.
His research uses microeconomic approaches to understand how crises and violent conflict in regions such as Africa, the Middle East and Asia affect people’s lives, incomes and food security over the long term, with the aim of developing more effective instruments for humanitarian assistance and development policy.
Professor Brück regularly advises national governments, the European Commission, international organisations, the United Nations, the World Bank and non-governmental organisations on issues related to food security, development, crises and conflict. St Cross College is proud to see one of its alumni help lead this vital global effort, and warmly congratulates him on this significant international appointment.
