Dr James J. Busuttil, a friend and supporter of St Cross, was recently featured by the Royal Asiatic Society, announcing the launch of the annual James J. Busuttil Medal and Prize for a book on human rights, preferably by an author within the first ten years of their academic career.
Nominations are currently invited for books on human rights published during 2024 and details for how to apply are available on the Medal and Prize webpage. Nominations will close on March 31st 2025, and will be reviewed by a panel of judges, with the winner announced by June 2025. An £1,000 award will be presented based on the judges' recommendation, and the winner will typically give a public lecture.
Dr Busuttil, who has extensive experience in human rights, offered the Medal and Prize to promote research and publication in this subject. He is an activist, author, academic and non-governmental organisation leader. He founded Amnesty International groups as a student, was asked to serve on the board of Amnesty International USA, has worked extensively on human rights fact-finding missions and published on international humanitarian law and European human rights. He has also created courses on human rights and served in leadership roles within human rights organisations, as well as at the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
