Research interests: the detection, epidemiology and impact of substandard and falsified medical products, the epidemiology and management of fevers, especially scrub typhus and murine typhus, antimicrobial resistance, beri beri, central nervous system infections, improving public health through implementation of research evidence in the Lao PDR and South and SE Asia.

Paul worked in the MORU Tropical Health Network, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok 1996-2000 and in 1999 founded, with Lao colleagues, the Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome Research Unit (LOMWRU), based within the Microbiology Laboratory of Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane, Lao PDR. They conducted clinical research to yield evidence to improve global, regional and Lao public health and to build laboratory, clinical and research capacity in Laos. He moved to Oxford in 2019.
