Abstract: In April this year, the Event Horizon Telescope produced the first stunning image of the 'shadow' of a black hole. This technique was based on combining the light from a network of telescopes spanning the globe. In this talk, Professor Matt Jarvis will discuss why black holes are fundamental to understanding the cosmos, and the ground-breaking techniques used to generate this spectacular image.
