Academic English Writing Classes

These weekly classes will be given by the Language Centre and will cover all of the knowledge needed for successful academic English writing for Oxford courses.

Class 1 - Academic Style/Text Cohesion

This class will highlight the main stylistic features of academic text as well as introducing lexical and grammatical techniques to improve text cohesion.

Class 2 - Writing a paragraph

This class will cover the basic features of academic paragraphs including topic, claim and support sentences as well as showing how best to plan paragraphing and how paragraphs can work together across larger sections.

Class 3 - Writing and introduction/Writing a conclusion

This class will analyse some typical essay introductions and conclusions to note typical features as well as revealing how introductions and conclusions relate to each other and other paragraphs in an essay.

Class 4 - Summarising and synthesising

This class will propose some step-by-step techniques for writing from reading, and explain where and how a writer's "voice" might be heard in paragraphs.
