Varsity 2024 features two St Cross Students

St Cross is proud to announce that we have not one, but two students selected for Oxford University Rugby Football Club (OURFC) Varsity Teams.

Jaid Debrah, a St Cross DPhil in Medical Sciences, only recently joined the OURFC at the end of January and was selected for the 3rd team Varsity Squad, known as the Pumas.

On Sunday 25th February the Pumas, including St Cross DPhil Candidate Jaid Debrah, won their Varsity match for the first time in history, clinching the victory against rivals Cambridge at Iffley Road. With amazing defence from both teams, the final score was 5-0 with Oxford coming out victorious through a remarkable try in the second half.

Jaid also captains the St Cross Women's Rugby Club and, as the Pumas celebrate their victory, extends a heartfelt invitation to aspiring rugby enthusiasts of all skill levels to join the St Cross Women's Rugby Club and partake in Cuppers this Trinity Term.

“Whether you're a seasoned player or a novice eager to learn” says Jaid “there's a place for you in this dynamic and inclusive community.” If you wish to join the St Cross Women’s Rugby Club, please contact Jaid here

Representing St Cross in the men’s team, Jack Hamilton, an MSc in Neuroscience, has been selected for the OURFG’s Men’s 1st Varsity team taking on Cambridge Saturday 2nd March.

When discussing his selection Jack says, “This is an incredibly historic fixture having first been played over 150 years ago and I am extremely excited to represent the college and the University on the biggest stage.”

He continues “The special part of the Oxford college system is that it allows you to not only play Uni sports but also represent your college in a more sociable, but nonetheless extremely competitive environment. Some of the best memories I’ve had at Oxford have been playing St Cross rugby and the close college friendships I have formed throughout the years.”

Jack and rest of the OURFC Team will be kicking off their match against Cambridge at 3pm at the Stonex Stadium on Saturday 2nd March with the Women’s match kicking off at the earlier time of 12 midday.

To be in the crowd cheering on Jack and the rest of the Oxford Men and Women on the field, you can book your tickets here for students and here for general admission. To find out more about the OURFC check out their website.

Congratulations to Jaid and best of luck to Jack and the rest of the OURFC!
