St Cross student Tristan Alphey (DPhil History, 2020) has been elected an Early Career Member of the Royal Historical Society.

This year, the RHS Council welcomes 123 Fellows, 87 Members and 71 Early Career Members. All those newly elected to the Fellowship and Membership are expected to bring a valuable range of expertise and experience that will help the Society to fulfil its objective of representing the diverse body of those engaged in historical scholarship.

Tristan's research is on early medieval nicknames in England c.410 to c.1066. Specifically, he is exploring the relationship between the presence and themes of nicknames and informal social power systems - competition, status, and peace-keeping, and how does the nickname use change over time, across space, and between classes?

Our congratulations go to Tristan on his well-deserved success!
