‘Syria: The Making and Unmaking of a Refuge State’ - Professor Dawn Chatty
St Cross Fellow Dawn Chatty, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology and Forced Migration and Former Director of the Refugee Studies Centre, has just launched her new book Syria: The Making and Unmaking of a Refuge State. Professor Chatty explores how modern Syria came to be a refuge state by looking at the last 150 years of widespread migrations, placing the current displacement in context, and shedding light on the rich history of Syria that is so often ignored when looking at the current crisis.
Syrian society has been shaped by diasporas from neighbouring countries, and by focusing on individual narratives and stories of integration and adaptation she provides a layered portrait of a nation whose cultural hybridity brings hope for future successful return and reintegration of displaced Syrian peoples.
Professor Chatty will be launching her book at an event hosted by the Refugee Studies Centre, at the Department for International Development, Mansfield Road on Wednesday 2 May, 17:00 - 18:30.
