Rana Mitter Explores Chinese Characters in New Radio Series

St Cross Fellow Professor Rana Mitter is presenting a new radio series on BBC Radio 4 - "Chinese Characters".

The series will see Rana, who is Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China, delve into Chinese history, picking 20 lives that illustrate the complexity and diversity of China from Mongol emperors to Shanghai sweatshop workers. The programme aims to give as multi-dimensional a picture as possible of China's vast history, with Rana choosing characters from across the centuries. Figures covered include political leaders Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, translator and monk Kumarajiva, feminist author Ding Ling, and historian Sima Qian.

The first episode airs on Monday 9 April and looks at Wu Zetian, the only woman ever to rule as China's emperor in her own right. UK residents can listen to the programme here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09ycztp.
