Professor Mitter has been a Governing Body Fellow of St Cross since 2001 and is Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China. From 2013 to 2020 he was Director of the University of Oxford China Centre and is a frequent contributor to print and broadcast media. His books include China’s War with Japan 1937-1945 (2013) and China’s Good War (2020). He is Vice-President for Public Engagement of the British Academy.
Professor Mitter said: “Being a Fellow of St Cross has brought immense richness to my life at Oxford. It is an honour to be able to provide leadership for the college during a period of transition and I look forward to conversation and cooperation with our community of students, staff, associates, and Fellows.”
The recruitment of a permanent Master will be led by the current Vice-Master, Professor Kevin Marsh. Professor Marsh will also oversee the recruitment of an Interim Bursar to replace John Tranter, who also retires in September.
