The Master is saddened to announce that Emeritus Fellow Dr Joseph (Joe) Olliver has passed away. Joe was a Fellow of St Cross from 1970 to 1996, concurrent with his position as University Lecturer in Surveying and Geodesy.  He was a well-loved and highly respected member of the College community for over half a century, and Joe's membership of the College bought him great pride, and joy in the friendships he made here.

Born in 1929, Joe’s career and time in education included Nottingham University where he studied a B.Sc. in Maths, Royal Engineers School of Military Survey, Tanganyika Surveys, lecturer at the University of Nairobi, lecturer at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, then 30 years as Lecturer at the University of Oxford.

Joe died peacefully at home in the early hours of Candlemas morning after a long illness, which was borne with his characteristic good humour and fortitude.

A memorial service will be held for Joe in Pusey Chapel on Thursday 16 Feb at 12:00, and afterwards in the Common Room.

The Master and all College members send their condolences to Joe’s family at this difficult time.
