Fellow Prof Sibel Erduran Publishes "Argumentation in Chemistry Education: Research, Policy and Practice"

St Cross Fellow and Professor of Science Education Sibel Erduran is the editor of a new book, "Argumentation in Chemistry Education: Research, Policy and Practice".

Published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the book brings together leading researchers to draw attention to research, policy and practice around the inclusion of argumentation - a form of scientific discourse playing a central role in the building of explanations, models and theories - in chemistry education.

Scientists use arguments to justify claims made about their observations, and the book addresses the implication that argumentation is a scientific habit of mind that needs to be appropriated by students and explicitly taught through suitable instruction.

Sibel Erduran is also the Deputy Director of Research at the Department of Education, and prior to her appointments at Oxford, she was the Chair of STEM Education at the University of Limerick, where she was the Director of EPI-STEM, the National Centre for STEM Education. She is an Editor for the International Journal of Science Education, Section Editor for Science Education, and serves on the Executive Board of the European Science Education Research Association.

"Argumentation in Chemistry Education: Research, Policy and Practice" is planned for release on 22 February 2019.
