Profile of Dr Kevin W. H. Tai

Dr Kevin W. H. Tai has been appointed Assistant Professor of English Language Education at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Kevin, who is an expert in translanguaging, graduated from St Cross College in 2018 after completing an MSc in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition.

HKU’s Faculty of Education is ranked eighth among the top education faculties worldwide by the 2022 QS World University Rankings by subject. 

“As early career academics, we are operating within an increasingly challenging environment,” advises Kevin who is now also an alumni mentor to St Cross students. 

“There are expectations for us to develop our teaching repertoire and our research publication records during our doctoral studies. It can be frustrating at times, but it is also a privilege to be able to create new knowledge and immerse ourselves in the theoretical questions that interest us.”

Additionally, Kevin is an Editorial Board Member and Editorial Assistant of the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism (SSCI-listed Journal; Routledge) and The Language Learning Journal (ECIS-listed Journal; Routledge). His doctoral research at University College of London was fully funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

Kevin recently received an offer from Routledge to publish his first monograph, entitled: "Combining Multimodal Conversation Analysis and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis: A Methodological Framework for Researching Translanguaging in Multilingual Classrooms".

As a mentor in the College’s Careers Programme, Kevin can share his expertise and experience in Language Education, Applied Linguistics, Academia, and Professorship.
