International Community

At the very heart of the St Cross College ethos is the idea of welcoming scholars from all parts of the globe, in all subjects. Indeed our motto "Ad quattuor cardines mundi " - "To the four corners of the Earth" - sums this up perfectly.

Over 70% of our student body come from outside the UK, with 62 nationalities represented from all over the globe.

This aspect, in conjunction with the interdisciplinary nature of the College, makes St Cross an incredibly interesting environment where students can share their cultural experiences and intellectual achievements. It also means that St Cross student often reach excellence in very different disciplines and sports: for example, Kelsey Ida (2011, MSc Global Governance and Diplomacy), who grew up on the Hawaiian coast and has thus been swimming all her life, won first prize with OUSC in the Varsity relay race across the English Channel in July 2011.

As the St Cross population is so diverse, the College offers a wide range of events catering to many cultures one would not normally find at other Oxford Colleges. For example, previous Hall night themes have included Greek Easter and Burns Night; St Cross also held the first Oxford University celebration for Chinese New Year.

And because food is a fundamental part of culture, our Chefs strive to create menus that reflect the cultural make-up of the College, ranging from European and North American dishes to food creations from China, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan and other countries as our membership requests.
