Dr Cristina Martinez
Knoop Junior Research Fellow
Postdoctoral Research Scientist, NDCN
Cristina’s background is in retinal diseases and pharmacological therapies. She obtained her PhD at the Health Research Institute of the La Fe University Hospital (Valencia, Spain), where she studied the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of retinitis pigmentosa and the effect of anti-TNFα antibodies as a pharmacological approach to delay photoreceptor death.
Cristina is engaged in ongoing research to develop gene therapies for currently incurable retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa or macular dystrophies, using modified forms of adeno-associated virus (AAV) as vectors to deliver therapeutic genes to retinal cells.
