Degree Days & Graduation

Graduation is the formal end to your degree and in order to mark this important occasion students are invited to attend a ceremony at the Sheldonian Theatre.

In order to attend a Degree Ceremony, students must book their place via the University's online portal.

For all students completing their taught course from Trinity Term 2013 onwards the University will write to you in the preceding Michaelmas term offering you a choice of dates for your degree ceremony. Research students will be written to by the University once they have been granted leave to supplicate for their degree. Historic students (i.e. those who completed their degrees prior to Trinity Term 2013) will still need to contact the St Cross Academic Office to make a booking.

Full details for either ceremony option are available via the links below

Details to note:

You should wear sub fusc (including cap) and a graduate's gown for the first part of the ceremony and will need the appropriate (for your degree) gown and hood for the second part.

Degree Certificates are University documents but are not handed out at the Oxford Ceremony. They are issued to College and will be available on your day of graduation.

Candidates should be aware that it is a condition of graduation that all debts to the University and the College must be paid in full before they can graduate at a degree ceremony.

Graduands and guests attending the ceremony should be aware that graduation ceremonies are regarded as public events. Names and degrees of graduands and their Colleges are published in the graduation programme. Audio and visual images of the ceremony are publicly available via the sale of personalised videos of the ceremony.

Once a candidate's name has been submitted, he or she may not withdraw from the ceremony without the Vice-Chancellor's express permission (to be granted only on good cause shown). If the candidate is eligible to be admitted to his/her degree(s), this will happen whether in person or in absence at the ceremony concerned

For any further information or to book in for a ceremony, please contact the Academic Office.

Arrangements for the ceremony

Graduands will be contacted by St Cross via email 2 - 3 weeks prior to the ceremony with final details for the day.

The University currently offers a maximum of three guest tickets per graduand for ceremonies held in the Sheldonian.

Graduands and guests are invited to gather at St Cross prior to the ceremony for a drinks reception to celebrate this special occasion. Professional photographers will be on hand in the College Quad to record the day.  There is no charge for the reception.

Note: We will be taking informal photographs during Degree Days, which we share on the St Cross website and social media platforms after the event. This is purely optional so please e-mail us if you wouldn't like to have your picture taken/shared.
