Sports activities

A wide variety of clubs and societies contribute to St Cross's lively social life. We have a fine tradition in sport. We have earned a reputation for success in intercollegiate competitions and tournaments, sometimes teaming up with other graduate colleges. Many of our students also participate at the Blues/Varsity level (representing the entire University).

Each year in Freshers Week we hold a Sports and Societies Fair in the Common Room, where representatives of College clubs and societies answer questions and entice you to join. But most sports teams and societies take new members year-round, so please see the list of sports clubs and societies below for more information and contact details.

College subsidies are available to help defray the cost of participation in St Cross and University sports. The application form is available on WebLearn.

Contact email addresses for society representatives can be formulated using the names and partial addresses shown followed by .ox.ac.uk

Cricket

Whether you are an experienced cricketer or you don’t know outs from overs, give the St Cross-Wolfson Cricket Club a try! We offer everything from competitive matches against other colleges to a "social" cricket team for people who want to learn something about this venerable sport in a more leisurely manner. Contact shrochis.karki@stx.ox.ac.uk or manav.bhushan@stx.ox.ac.uk for more information.

Football

St Cross men may join the Wolfson-St Cross Football Club, and St Cross women may join the Chihuahuas (from Wolfson, St Antony's, and St Cross).

Rowing

Why not come and row with Wolfson/St Cross?
Wolfson College Boat Club are a close-knit community, with about a quarter of us hailing from St Cross. We have opportunities both for experienced rowers who want to compete at a high level and for complete novices who just want to try Oxford's most quintessential sport. Our crews have enjoyed great recent success (e.g., winning blades 10 times in the past 5 years, and qualifying for Henley Royal Regatta in 2008). To find out how you can ‘win blades,' or just for more information, check out our video at http://www.wolfsonrowing.org, or email Paul.Kelly@stx.

Rugby

The Graduate Barbarians are an all inclusive rugby teams formed from the graduates from St. Cross, Linacre, St. Antony's, Wolfson, Kellogg and any other player who happens to wander along to our training sessions and matches. We take all abilities from the absolute beginner to the rare Rugby Blue and put as many players on the pitch as we can manage throughout the season. If you're a bit rusty from your school days or you're new to the UK and you've always wondered what Rugby is all about, please come along, we'd love to have you. We train 10.45am-1pm every Saturday morning, meeting outside Linacre College. Hope to see you there - David.Sleep@imm.

Squash

The St Cross squash team competes in the intercollegiate ladder. In our first season the two teams won 3 promotions. We hope to push on even further in the coming year. We welcome people of all skill levels to come out to practices, which are usually held twice per week. St. Cross also has an internal squash ladder which is open to players of all ability levels. We hold introductory sessions several times per term to help beginners understand the basics of the game, and more advanced players hone their skills. To learn more about squash (including what it is and how to play), or if you are looking for matches, contact daniel.dekadt@stx

Gym Facilities

St Cross has made arrangements with Wolfson College and St Catherine’s College for our students to use their gym facilities. For these and other possibilities, see the Student Gym Membership page.

Other Wolfson College facilities and clubs

St Crossers are invited to attend the activities fair at Wolfson College (the date of which should appear on the Freshers' Week schedule). To see a list of Wolfson's clubs and societies, visit http://www.wolfson.ox.ac.uk/clubs/. There are countless University clubs in sports ranging from Aikido to yachting, open to all Oxford students. Most are online at http://www.sport.ox.ac.uk/, but if you need any help finding your sport, email our Sports and Societies Rep, Paul.kelly@stx.

Sports Subsidies

The Student Representative Committee provides subsidies for students taking part in College or University-based sporting activities. In the past we have been able to meet up to 40% of sports-related costs (up to a maximum of about £50), depending upon how many people apply for the subsidy. Application forms are available here.

Didn't find the sport or activity you were looking for? We may be able to help you find it elsewhere in the University, or you can start your own St Cross club! Contact the Sports and Societies Representative (Paul.Kelly@stx) in the first instance.
