St Cross Players Lead oxford to Varsity Victory Oxford have emerged victorious from this year's Varsity match beating Cambridge 33 points to 29
In a thrilling contest, which has been hailed as one of the most exciting matches in recent years, Oxford dominated in the first half playing with conviction and flair. However, Cambridge emerged from the break with renewed fire and put themselves back in contention with a series of scores. The final few minutes of the match proved to be nerve-wracking, but Oxford held on to take the victory. As always, the match was not without controversy as Oxford was denied a conversion kick, despite our sources in the North Stand affirming the kick was good. The crowning glory of this victory for St Cross members was the involvement of three St Cross students within the squad, making St Cross the best represented of all the Colleges within the team. Captain and Flanker Peter Clarke, Prop Wayne Thompson and Lock Ian Kench were an integral part of the squad and were a credit to the College throughout. The high point of the match for St Crossers was undoubtedly during the second half when our very own Peter Clarke touched down to score the Blues fourth try of the afternoon. This victory follows the success of the Greyhounds (the OURFC 2nd XV) who beat Cambridge on 3rd December 27 points to 15. Once again St Cross played a part in this success with the inclusion of student David Rogers in the team, who played hooker. David was joined by JRF, Dr Alistair McCormick who was on the subs bench for the match. Congratulations to all our rugby players!
