Christopher Ryan, who was a Visiting Student at St Cross reading Turkish and Persian in 1989-90, has just published his first book, The Story of the Damascus Drum. Set in the ancient cities and mountains of nineteenth-century Syria, it is a tale of love and self-discovery, of villains and heroes, fools and sages .. and a lot of goats.
