Rana Mitter works on the history and politics of modern China. He is particularly interested in nationalism, and the way in which China's past is reflected in its present. He is at present working on the links between China's war against Japan in the 1930s and 1940s and contemporary politics. For his most recent book, A Bitter Revolution: China's Struggle with the Modern World (OUP, 2004), he was awarded the title Times Higher Education Supplement Young Academic Author of the Year 2005; the book was also runner-up for the Longman/History Today Book of the Year, and a finalist for the British Academy Book Prize in the same year. He has appeared on various History Channel documentaries and comments regularly on BBC radio.
