Departmental Profile
Jörg Friedrichs has a theoretical interest in international relations and historical political sociology. His empirical focus is on the nexus between energy resources and social change, as well as the societal implications of specific usages of force.
His first research monograph was on European Approaches to International Relations Theory (2004). He has published another monograph on Fighting Terrorism and Drugs: Europe and International Police Cooperation (2008). His articles have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as International Organization, Energy Policy, European Journal of International Relations, and Leiden Journal of International Law.
Jörg Friedrichs is currently developing his research agenda in two broad directions:
-
Energy Resources and Social Change. From its inception, industrial capitalism has been based on abundant energy. A global decline of energy production ("peak oil") would lead to a variety of reactions in different parts of the world. Energy resources and social change are connected in multiple ways, including climate change.
-
Changing Uses of Force. Usages of force are changing in various directions simultaneously: internationalization, privatization, fusion of the internal (police) and external (military) use of force, and devolution to communal groups. His current focus of attention is the phenomenon of Sharia enforcement in different parts of the world.
